ICL – Implantable contact lens

Refractive Surgery for high myopes and hyperopes

Eye-Tech Day Surgeries is a TGA accredited facility for ICL implantation.

An ICL is an implantable contact lens made from a collagen-based material with a design similar to existing intraocular lenses currently used to correct vision after cataract surgery. The contact lens is inserted through a 2.5 mm incision in the cornea and into the anterior chamber of the eye. This contact lens is positioned in front of the natural lens and behind the iris thus correcting the refractive error.

Advantages

  • Reversibility. The ICL can easily be removed.
  • Safety No corneal damage, no scarring
  • Rapid Recovery almost immediately with no restriction in activities
  • Stabilitytotally stable no drift reported to date

Disadvantages

Known Risks

  • Pupil Block Glaucoma. This occurs when the iridectomy performed pre op in the consulting rooms is inadequate
  • Steroid Glaucoma 5% (resolves)
  • Focal Cataracts from iridectomy or implantation
  • Infection
  • Visual aberrations glare, halos etc. These seem to be minimal due to large optical zones.

Cost:

The lens is tailor made for the individual and costs $1000.00, the surgeons fee is $1000.00 and the Day Surgeries charge is also $1000.00 per eye. Unfortunately these fees are not refundable from the Private Health Funds as they are classified as plastic surgery by the funds.
