Detailed Description
Cataract surgery has changed dramatically over the past decade, principally as a result of small incision surgery and foldable intra ocular lenses. The initial step of the procedure involves removing the cloudy part of the natural lens. This is done through an incision that is only 2.0 mm wide. The specific area for incision is dependent on any focusing problems that the person may have, since certain incision sites may be able to correct or reduce these problems. Ultrasound removes the cataract. Then the artificial lens is inserted into the eye through a slightly larger wound. These lenses remain in the eye permanently as the material used is perfectly safe and will not be rejected by the eye.
80% of cataract surgery in Queensland is carried out in day surgeries.
Local anaesthetic in the form of drops or injection anaethetises the eye and a relaxing drug is utilised to ensure patient comfort. Full anaesthetic monitoring is carried out on all patients during the anaesthetic, surgery and recovery stages.
A maximum stay at the day surgery is approximately 3-4 hours.
The patients are admitted one and a half-hours pre operatively to ensure full dilation of the pupil. This is achieved by using a series of eye drops. Patients do not change into theatre cloths but are asked to wear clean comfortable clothing, which allows chest access. Eye-Tech Day surgery supplies a cotton dressing gown, over boots and a theatre hat. Theatre time may vary from 20 minutes to 45 minutes depending on the surgeon. The patient then relaxes in first stage recovery prior to sitting recovery where light refreshments are offered. The discharge nurse will then advise the patient and carer of discharge instructions post op appointments and medications.
It is Eye-Tech Day Surgeries strict policy that no patient shall leave the premises unaccompanied.
